Creator usage rights expired? Here's what to do next.

Updated November 4, 2026 · 5 min read

You've found a creator ad still running after its usage rights ended, or the creator found it first. Here's how to handle it in the right order, keep the relationship intact, and make sure it's the last time.

1. Find every affected ad, not just the one you saw

If one ad outlived its license, its duplicates probably did too. In Ads Manager, search active ads for the creator's name, the asset name and the partnership handle, and check for re-uploads of the same video. List them all before you act.

2. Decide: pause or renew

If the ad is a top performer, renewal may be worth it. If not, pause it today. Either way, don't leave it running while you decide: every extra day is more time to account for.

3. Talk to the creator before they talk to you

Reach out first. Say plainly which ad ran past the window, for how long, and what you'd like to do: pause it, or extend. Creators deal with this more often than you'd think, and an honest note early usually leads to a fair invoice for the extra time and, often, a renewal.

Finding it yourself puts you in a far better position than receiving a screenshot from the Ad Library.

4. Agree the extra time in writing

Settle the past period and any extension in one written agreement: the dates, the channels, the assets and the fee. Published 2026 rate data puts extensions at roughly 60–75% of the original fee, which gives you a reasonable starting point. If the creator has a manager or agent, include them.

If the amounts are large or the contract is unclear, get legal advice before you agree to anything.

5. Make sure it doesn't happen again

Ads outlive licenses because nobody checks live ads against end dates. Close that gap:

  • Keep one rights tracker, one row per licensed asset, with end dates and channels.
  • Get a warning 14 days before each window closes, while renewal is still a friendly ask.
  • Check live ads, including duplicates and re-uploads, not just the original ad.
  • Automate the check so it doesn't depend on one person remembering.

Common questions

How much will the creator charge for the extra time?
It depends on your contract and the creator. Many charge their standard monthly usage rate for each extra month, sometimes with a premium for use that wasn't agreed in advance.
Can we just delete the ad and say nothing?
The Meta Ad Library keeps a record of ads, and creators do check it. Coming forward is usually cheaper and better for the relationship than being found out.
Does pausing the ad end our liability?
Pausing stops it growing. The time it already ran past the window is still outside the license, so settle it with the creator.
How do we catch this earlier next time?
Check every live ad against its license on a schedule and get alerts before end dates. That's what Lapse does, read-only, for Meta ad accounts.

Find out which of your creator ads are past their license.

Send your rights sheet and read-only access to one Meta ad account. Within 48 hours you get every live ad that's expired, about to expire, or unlicensed.
